Historic
Climb for Essex Primary
Last year for the first time in the history of Essex Primary, 21 children
gained Level five in the Maths National Tests at Key Stage 2. This was
a record breaking achievement for Essex Primary.
Essex
Primary uses portable laptops to its students on a one-one basis. Yolanda
Samaria, the schools ICT head, attributes the successful Year 6 2003
Maths results to the hard work, coordinated approach by teachers and
the timely use of the JellyJames Target Assessment Key Stage 2 Maths
Paper A and B software.
A
cultural shift from the use of paper based assessment to electronic
assessment and training of staff to use the ICT resource efficiently
has saved substantial classroom and teacher time. This cultural change
was supported from top down. Traditionally, preparing students for the
National Tests was time consuming, paper and resource intensive. The
software tool now provides information within seconds of completing
the test without the teacher engaging in any paperwork.
JellyJames
have attempted to closely match the National Tests electronically which
is an area that Becta and QCA have been closely researching.
Year
6, students work through the assessment software, which very closely
emulates the actual tests. Instant and immediate results from these
assessments identifies areas for focus, along with each child's Level
of Attainment, providing timely and targeted information. The easy to
access information, then allowed the teacher to address the weaknesses
quickly and reinforce the concepts. This was the first time in the history
of Essex Primary, 21 children gained Level 5's in the Maths National
Tests.
Yolanda
explained, "the teacher can quickly identify how each child has performed
on each question and in seconds gauge the common areas of difficulties."
This year the school has purchased a projector and Yolanda and her team
will be able to use the software even more effectively. The questions
from the assessments that have proved challenging will be projected
onto the white board thus engaging the group collectively. The software,
unlike paper based assessment can be used year- on- year, without the
need to photocopy, mark and generate paperwork.
The
teachers have found that "the software is beneficial as it differentiates
the work of every child in the year and makes target setting visible
and quantifiable. It further reduces the enormous time spent in setting,
marking and analysing assessments. The school is moving away from traditional
paper based assessments to electronic assessments as the ICT medium
is thoroughly enjoyed by the children and it provides feedback immediately
both to the teacher and the student". A tool that gives teachers more
direct contact time and supports the process of preparing students for
the tests.
